National Opt Out Day set for November 24th

Source: Opt Out Day
Posted on 11.14.10 by Mary Lou Seymour

“OptOutDay.com is an educational outreach campaign, designed to get people to better understand what they are now consenting to when they purchase a plane ticket. Many people only fly around the holidays and may not be aware of the security changes, which is why November 24 was chosen. There is no intent or desire to delay passengers en route to friends and family over Thanksgiving. Once people are made aware of what is happening, they may have reservations about the new virtual strip searches and enhanced pat downs — especially for their children or spouse or other loved one.” (11/10)

NC, NM: Armed “Restore the Constitution” rallies planned

“We want to remind Americans that they have a basic human right to keep and bear arms — both for self-defense and to preserve individual freedom — that is not only enshrined in the Bill of Rights, but is protected only by Americans’ willingness to actually exercise that right. Just as is true with free speech, freedom of assembly, and every other right guaranteed by the Constitution — if you don’t insist on your Constitutional freedoms by exercising them in public, you will lose them.” (08/03/10)

Scarecrow for President

Author: Stewart Browne
Posted on 03.04.09 by Mary Lou Seymour

“Scarecrow is an attempt to unify libertarians behind one presidential candidate in the 2012 election cycle. The fact that Scarecrow isn’t running, or even real, is a bonus. … If you want liberty and smaller government, electoral politics is a loser’s game. Still, it’s the game we play in America, and it’s so entrenched in our culture that any attempt to break free of it must first involve a widespread acknowledgment of its failings. … Scarecrow For President is a movement through which libertarians can announce to the world that we’re here, we’re correct, we’re huge in number, and we’re done with Washington’s game. … The intent of this site is to kick off a movement. It is the webmaster’s hope that the movement will grow much larger than this site. I am just an anonymous blogger with an idea. You are Scarecrow For President. You should make your own Scarecrow For President site, market it, and update it constantly. You should steal all my readers and become the center of the movement.” (02/09)

“With our economy in crisis, the US Government is scrambling to rescue our banks by purchasing their ‘distressed assets,’ i.e., assets that no one else wants to buy from them. We figured that instead of protesting this plan, we’d give regular Americans the same opportunity to sell their bad assets to the government. We need your help and you need the Government’s help! Use the form below to submit bad assets you’d like the government to take off your hands. And remember, when estimating the value of your 1997 limited edition Hanson single CD ‘MMMbop,’ it’s not what you can sell these items for that matters, it’s what you think they are worth. The fact that you think they are worth more than anyone will buy them for is what makes them bad assets.” (09/25/08)

Restore the Constitution in your county now

Source: from Reason to Freedom
Author: Melinda Pillsbury-Foster
Posted on 08.10.08 by Thomas L. Knapp

“This is the first Restore the Constitution Project for you to undertake in your county. Using it you can deliver the message that the Constitution is the Supreme Law of the land. You will find instructions, sources for supplies and a Proof of Service Form for this project. Other projects, each on its own small site, will follow. Using these, you can serve law enforcement officers with a letter and a copy of the Constitution. If you like, you can also include a copy of ‘The Proper Role of Law Enforcement,’ by Sheriff Richard Mack. The project can be carried out by a small group very inexpensively. It is the first of a series of such projects. Together, the projects will enable you to restore your county to government by the people, transitioning from the present system to one that is stable and reliable and resistant to becoming uppity.” (08/08/08)

Help! Democracy needs you

Source: Slate
Author: John Dickerson
Posted on 05.09.07 by Thomas L. Knapp

“Everyone is to blame for the shallowness of the answers. Candidates don’t like being rushed by the short response times, but they also don’t want to have to talk for too long. In-depth answers and multiple questions on the same topic force candidates into the spooky land beyond talking points. The networks insist on short responses and use gimmicks like Internet questions and hand-raising to create drama (and maybe news). They’d make the candidates race to tie balloon animals if it would generate a spark, because debates are network branding exercises. The MSNBC logo on stage at the first Democratic debate was so large it could have attracted space aliens (and, depending on your view of Mike Gravel, may have succeeded). In any case, the upshot is that the debates have been lackluster. This is no way to treat the most important election of the last 80 years. So, how do we fix it?” [action item included — send your suggestions!] (05/09/07)

“After much preliminary organizing, United for Peace and Justice and dozens of other leading groups have launched ‘The Declaration of Peace,’ a campaign to pressure the U.S. government to stop its war and occupation on Iraq, much as the Pledge of Resistance did long ago. The plan is simple. We continue to call for the immediate end of the war on Iraq, but presuming it does not end in the next few weeks, we urge every peace group in the nation to organize nonviolent civil disobedience at their local congressional representative’s office during the week of September 21-28, 2006, just days before Congress adjourns for the fall elections. We will hold our banners, demand that the troops come home, and sit in with steadfast nonviolence demanding an end to this mad war. And we will keep up the public pressure through the fall until a breakthrough for peace.” (07/11/06)

We oppose your proposal to attack Iran. Iran does not possess nuclear weapons, just as Iraq did not possess nuclear weapons. If Iran had such weapons, that would not justify the use of force, any more than any other nation would be justified in launching a war against the world’s greatest possesor of nuclear arms, the United States. The most effective way to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons would be to closely monitor its nuclear energy program, and to improve diplomatic relations — two tasks made much more difficult by threatening to bomb Iranian territory. Voters for peace: take the pledge

“Americans who oppose the Iraq occupation are a committed and growing majority of the voting population. But, anti-war voters are not organized and too often fall into the trap of voting for a pro-war candidate because the candidate is seen as the ‘lesser evil.’ So, rather than voting for what we want — ending the Iraq occupation, or preventing a new war against Iran — people vote for what they don’t want — someone who promises to ‘manage’ the war better or even send more U.S. troops. The goal of Voters for Peace is to educate and organize voters so candidates need to support both ending the occupation of Iraq and preventing future wars of aggression. Together, using lobbying, targeted demonstrations, media advocacy and a pledge to eschew pro-war candidates, we will make the anti-war perspective a powerful mainstream political force that cannot be ignored.” (03/06)

“Welcome to the Black Shamrock dot org, the website of the Black Shamrock Campaign, where people are invited to post photographs of the Black Shamrock at various locations in Ireland and throughout the world. The Black Shamrock symbolises our mourning for all those who died as a result of Irish collaboration in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, for which the airports at Shannon, Aldergrove and Baldonnel have become pit-stops. It also symbolises our mourning for the loss of Irish Neutrality. … The Black Shamrock is also, of course, a symbol of resistance. “Some church bureaucrats of various denominations have joined the ranks of extremist gun grabbers in promoting bans or restrictive controls on the private possession of firearms. This undermines the right of self-defense and the right to life itself. To stop these ecclesiastical extremists, the St. Gabriel Possenti Society, Inc. works with law-abiding gun owners of various religious persuasions to oppose church gun grabbers. … Send the churches a message! Petition: Free Cory Maye

“The law has been misapplied to Cory Maye. If an unidentified intruder were to burst into our home in the middle of the night, we would be within our rights to defend ourselves and our children. Given the law of Mississippi, Cory Maye acted within his right on the night of December 26th, 2001. It is a great tragedy that a police officer lost his life in this encounter. The execution of Cory Maye would magnify the tragedy, killing an innocent citizen because of the death of an officer. Haley Barbour, the governor of Mississippi, should grant an unconditional pardon to Cory Maye.”

The Million Moon March

“An international citizen disarmament coalition, Control Arms, is sponsoring a ‘Million Faces petition’ and ‘is collecting photos and self portraits from around the world to reach [their] goal of one million faces by June 2006. [They] will use these faces to send a powerful, global message of support to the world’s governments for an International Arms Trade Treaty.’ The idea of The Million Moon March (as in ‘mooning’) is to send them photos from the side that believes in the right of the people to keep and bear arms — to let the rights grabbers know there are untold numbers of people who refuse to be disarmed, and quite candidly, to taunt and hopefully enrage them.” [Editor’s note: Thanks to the inimitable David Codrea for this action … be sure to check his blog for the latest pictures and join in the fun by submitting your own - MLS] (02/06/06)

Protect your right to bio-identical hormone treatment

Source: Hotze Health and Wellness Center
Event Date(s): thru 04/04/06
Posted on 01.24.06 by Mary Lou Seymour

“Wyeth Pharmaceutical wants the FDA to take away your right to choose safe, effective and natural, bio-identical hormones and regulate your choice of health treatments. Wyeth, the maker of Premarin and Prempro, filed a ‘Citizens Complaint’ with the FDA on October 16, 2005, requesting that the FDA effectively prohibit compounding pharmacies from providing bio-identical hormones to their patients. Since the 2002 Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) which demonstrated that Wyeth’s products, Premarin and Prempro, caused a significant increase in breast cancer, blood clots to the lungs, heart attacks and strokes, Wyeth has seen a 68% decline in sales of Premarin Family products between 2002-2004. Tens of thousands of women have forsaken the Premarin family of drugs for natural, biologically identical hormones prepared by compounding pharmacies. Wyeth can and must be defeated in its attempt to restrict patients’ rights to choose to safe, effective and natural treatments using bio-identical hormones. You can voice your opposition by telling the FDA your story about the benefits that bio-identical hormones have made in your life. The comment filing period ends on April 4, 2006.” [Editor’s note: Read the Wyeth complaint and comments at ttp://www.fda.gov/ohrms/dockets/dockets/05p0411/05p0411.htm and spread the word, this is of vital importance to millions of women in America - MLS] (01/23/06)

“ARMS AGAINST WAR is an individual declaration of a desire for an end to the war in Iraq. The wearing of a strip of any white fabric is an indication that the wearer opposes this war — regardless of their political views, religion, location or race. This simple, free and instant form of protest has come about in order to show unity and agreement on one point — an end to the war in Iraq - whatever your individual reasons for thinking so. So please, if you believe in this one statement ‘I WANT AN END TO THE WAR IN IRAQ’ — then please tear a white strip of fabric and tie it around your arm — the intention is to go on wearing these as a full time, peaceful demonstration until the war ends, please join us in this action. The Drug Czar’s coming to a town near you

“The Drug Czar is going on the road to convince schools to take advantage of millions of dollars in federal grant money made available for the express purpose of testing teens’ urine. Parents everywhere should be ‘pissed off’ that their hard-earned tax dollars are being flushed down the toilet — literally — on programs that usurp family decision making and do nothing to stop young people from using drugs. … If you live in or around any of these cities, please get in touch with SSDP as soon as possible to find out how you can counteract the Drug Czar’s propaganda machine when it comes to town. Students, parents, and activists had a great time raining on the Drug Czar’s parade last year. Stop Big Brother Project

“It’s not every day you see a mainstream newspaper step outside the safe zone and take up the activist role. The Oakland Tribune is daring to do so. An editorial last week titled ‘Big Brother is watching’ listed some of the most egregious examples of how George Orwell’s ‘1984′ has been becoming truer and truer of America itself …. The editorial went on with more background on the Orwell work itself, then issued an appeal to its readers: ‘We think it’s time for Congress to heed the warning of George Orwell. To that end, we’re asking for your help: Mail us or drop off your tattered copies of ‘1984.’ … The challenge has been taken up by a group of libertarians, to collect and donate as many copies of ‘1984′ as possible, and forward them to the Tribune for distribution. … One contributor has promised to match donations up to the first $100 toward purchases of new copies. Libertarian bookseller Jim Peron has agreed to provide the books at a discount. Moreover, the International Society for Individual Liberty is getting into the act, offering to purchase copies of the book from that bookseller, with any donations made for that purpose. All one needs to do is indicate it is for the Stop Big Brother Project.” (12/29/05)

Demand Congress investigate illegal wiretapping

“Journalists have revealed that President Bush personally authorized the National Security Agency (NSA) to wiretap the international phone and email communications of people within the U.S. — without a search warrant. But only one group has the power to get to the bottom of this scheme to invade Americans’ privacy: the United States Congress. There is already bipartisan support on the Hill for such an investigation, but it needs shoring up. Battle for gun records privacy resumes

“House and Senate negotiators are reportedly close to hammering out differences on legislation that could greatly impact gun owners. You will remember that before the Thanksgiving break, legislators were trying to ram PATRIOT Act revisions through the Congress and onto the Presidents desk. Some of these revisions would improve the PATRIOT Act … some would not. Of greatest concern to gun owners is a provision in H.R. 3199 that would allow the FBI to obtain ‘firearms sales records.’ … This bill is clearly on the fast track. It is rumored on Capitol Hill that negotiators are nearing a deal on H.R. 3199. Petition: Free the peace activists

“Four members of Christian Peacemaker Teams were taken this past Saturday, November 26, in Baghdad, Iraq. They are not spies, nor do they work in the service of any government. They are people who have dedicated their lives to fighting against war and have clearly and publicly opposed the invasion and occupation of Iraq. … Each of the four C.P.T. members being held in Iraq has dedicated his life to resisting the darkness and misery of war and occupation. Convinced that it is not enough to oppose the war from the safety of their homes, they made the difficult decision to go to Iraq, knowing that the climate of mistrust created by foreign occupation meant that they could be mistaken for spies or missionaries. They went there with a simple purpose: to bear witness to injustice and to embody a different kind of relationship between cultures and faiths. … We appeal to those holding these activists to release them unharmed so that they may continue their vital work as witnesses and peacemakers.” (12/01/05)

End federal flood insurance

Source: Downsize DC
Event Date(s): ongoing
Posted on 11.09.05 by Mary Lou Seymour

“Federal flood insurance transfers wealth from lower income earners to the more affluent, encourages people to build homes where they should not be built, and promotes disasters such as the one in New Orleans. Congress should not use our money in this way. One way to prevent future disasters such as New Orleans is to have fewer people living in flood plains. But federal policy takes the opposite approach it pays people to live in flood prone areas through federally funded flood insurance. This has cost taxpayers tens of billions of dollars to date, and the policy is made even worse by the fact that it transfers wealth from taxpayers who don’t own property, to those who do. It is a form of welfare for the more affluent and politically powerful. This must end. Use the form below to send Congress a message asking them to end federal flood insurance.”

Stop the MPAA and RIAA’s Horror Triple Bill!

“On Thursday, November 3rd, the heads of the MPAA and RIAA presented to the House Subcommittee on the Courts, the Internet, and Intellectual Property their plans for the future of digital technology. For new radio technologies, you’ll be restricted to recording radio shows for a minimum of 30 minutes, for a maximum of 50 hours. And all analog to digital video conversions will be forced to watch for, and obey, a concealed copy restriction mark. Alert: Trigger locks, here they come again!

Source: Gun Owners of America
Posted on 10.17.05 by Mary Lou Seymour

“Last week, a bill containing a mandatory trigger lock requirement looked to be dormant on Capitol Hill. The prevailing wisdom was that the bill was dead for the year. However, given the mercurial nature of legislation and legislative bodies, one can never be certain of what is going to happen as long as Congress is in session. One event that can always shake up the legislative calendar is experiencing a leadership change — such as when pro-gun House Majority Leader Tom DeLay stepped down from his position recently. What we do know at this point is that the bill is before the Rules Committee today, and will most likely reach the House floor sometime this week. … Please ask your Representative to urge the House leadership to take up H.R. 800, which contains no gun control proposals, rather than its Senate counterpart.” (10/17/05)
