“Wikileaks is developing an uncensorable Wikipedia for untraceable mass document leaking and analysis. Our primary interests are oppressive regimes in Asia, the former Soviet bloc, Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East, but we also expect to be of assistance to those in the west who wish to reveal unethical behavior in their own governments and corporations. We aim for maximum political impact; this means our interface is identical to Wikipedia and usable by non-technical people. We have received over 1.2 million documents so far from dissident communities and anonymous sources.” [A website for government whistleblowers] (01/07)

“Bob Evans, Cory’s lawyer, writes to say that Cory’s justice fund is now at a zero balance. As I’ve previously written, legal expenses for Cory are no longer a problem. Covington and Burling is footing the bill for his defense. But Cory’s family is rather poor. And he of course can’t support his kids from prison. … So once Covington came on board, Cory used the fund to help his family make the trip from Monticello, Mississippi to Parchman Farm where he’s imprisoned. … If you’re interested in contributing, the information is below. But please do so knowing that you’d be contributing to more of the same sorts of expenses. This is not a legal defense fund. Cory Maye Justice Fund c/o R.E. Evans P.O. Never before has a judge elected as a Libertarian given the oath of office to any newly elected officials elected as a Libertarian’ said Mark Rutherford, State Chairman of the Libertarian Party of Indiana. … Susan Bell was elected to the Town Court in 2003. Tillson was elected to the Clay Township Advisory Board, and Coffman was elected to the Liberty Township Advisory Board in last November’s election.” (01/02/07)

A movement is afoot among libertarians, gamblers and right-wing blogs to draft Las Vegas sports handicapper Wayne Allyn Root to run for president in 2008. … Root said he has a meeting scheduled for later this month with Libertarian Party officials. ‘I’d have to be convinced I had a realistic chance, not to win the presidency, but to build a base; that it wouldn’t hurt my standing with the Republican Party; and that I could continue to run my business …. Bringing a little diversity to the race for representative from the 150th district is Libertarian candidate Chief Wana Dubie — with the campaign slogan ‘Put a hippie to work in ‘06.’ Complete with marijuana leaf tattoo on his forehead, Dubie will face off against incumbent Republican Majority Assistant Deputy Whip Jason Smith and Democrat challenger Jim O’Donnell. … Dubie, 47, of Salem admits right up front that he’s not a politician. But his candidacy is setting the stage for a Dubie vs. Blunt race in ‘08, he said.” (10/22/06)

“Supporters rallied for Winchester resident Lauren Canario in CT on Sunday. Canario was arrested on 9/22 for sitting on the porch of a friend’s house reading a book. The home had been [stolen] by the City of New London …. About 20 supporters held signs outside her jail on Sunday for 4 hours, asking for her release and bringing attention to the eminent domain injustice in New London, and around the county. Kat Kanning is fasting for Lauren’s release. She began fasting the evening of Friday the 13th and plans to continue until Lauren’s release.” (10/16/06)

“Two percent of the vote. That’s all the polls say Libertarian Barry Hess is good for in the race for governor this election season. Those kinds of odds would sink most people seeking political office. Not Hess. Those kinds of numbers make him grin. Hess is running for governor as a Libertarian, going up against Democratic incumbent Janet Napolitano and outspoken Republican challenger Len Munsil. Although many pollsters write Hess off as a non-factor, he considers himself Napolitano’s and Munsil’s peer. ‘I’m a legitimate candidate … representing a legitimate party,’ said Hess, 49. Don’t blame yourself if you haven’t heard of Hess or much about his politics. As a Libertarian, he shuns the use of public money to campaign. So don’t expect to see any TV commercials with him throwing the catchphrase, ‘I’m Barry Hess, and I approved this message.’ But the Phoenix father of one believes he speaks to most voters’ sensibilities on such topics as immigration and education, while also embracing the phaseout of taxes and preserving gun rights as key priorities.” [editor’s note: A relatively balanced news story - SAT] (10/10/06)
