“This bill provides, in the form of grants, about $1 billion to the states to ‘provide the National Instant Criminal Background Check System [NICS] with all records concerning persons who are prohibited from possessing or receiving a firearm under subsection (g) or (n) of section 922 of title 18, United States Code, regardless of the elapsed time since the disqualifying event.’ Covered under this bill are records pertaining to the Lautenberg misdemeanor gun ban, lists of persons under indictment, mental health records, records relevant to the identification of illegal aliens and other records.” (01/23/07)

Covington and Burling is footing the bill for his defense. But Cory’s family is rather poor. And he of course can’t support his kids from prison. … So once Covington came on board, Cory used the fund to help his family make the trip from Monticello, Mississippi to Parchman Farm where he’s imprisoned. … If you’re interested in contributing, the information is below. Never before has a judge elected as a Libertarian given the oath of office to any newly elected officials elected as a Libertarian’ said Mark Rutherford, State Chairman of the Libertarian Party of Indiana. … Susan Bell was elected to the Town Court in 2003. “Supporters rallied for Winchester resident Lauren Canario in CT on Sunday. Canario was arrested on 9/22 for sitting on the porch of a friend’s house reading a book. The home had been [stolen] by the City of New London …. About 20 supporters held signs outside her jail on Sunday for 4 hours, asking for her release and bringing attention to the eminent domain injustice in New London, and around the county. Kat Kanning is fasting for Lauren’s release. She began fasting the evening of Friday the 13th and plans to continue until Lauren’s release.” (10/16/06)

AZ: Libertarian looks to fed-up voters

“Two percent of the vote. That’s all the polls say Libertarian Barry Hess is good for in the race for governor this election season. Those kinds of odds would sink most people seeking political office. Not Hess. Those kinds of numbers make him grin. Hess is running for governor as a Libertarian, going up against Democratic incumbent Janet Napolitano and outspoken Republican challenger Len Munsil. Although many pollsters write Hess off as a non-factor, he considers himself Napolitano’s and Munsil’s peer. ‘I’m a legitimate candidate … representing a legitimate party,’ said Hess, 49. Don’t blame yourself if you haven’t heard of Hess or much about his politics. As a Libertarian, he shuns the use of public money to campaign. So don’t expect to see any TV commercials with him throwing the catchphrase, ‘I’m Barry Hess, and I approved this message.’ But the Phoenix father of one believes he speaks to most voters’ sensibilities on such topics as immigration and education, while also embracing the phaseout of taxes and preserving gun rights as key priorities.” [editor’s note: A relatively balanced news story - SAT] (10/10/06)
