As I’ve previously written, legal expenses for Cory are no longer a problem. Covington and Burling is footing the bill for his defense. But Cory’s family is rather poor. And he of course can’t support his kids from prison. … So once Covington came on board, Cory used the fund to help his family make the trip from Monticello, Mississippi to Parchman Farm where he’s imprisoned. … If you’re interested in contributing, the information is below. Never before has a judge elected as a Libertarian given the oath of office to any newly elected officials elected as a Libertarian’ said Mark Rutherford, State Chairman of the Libertarian Party of Indiana. … Susan Bell was elected to the Town Court in 2003. A movement is afoot among libertarians, gamblers and right-wing blogs to draft Las Vegas sports handicapper Wayne Allyn Root to run for president in 2008. … Root said he has a meeting scheduled for later this month with Libertarian Party officials. ‘I’d have to be convinced I had a realistic chance, not to win the presidency, but to build a base; that it wouldn’t hurt my standing with the Republican Party; and that I could continue to run my business …. My ultimate goal has never changed: to be the Republican senator for the state of Nevada.’” [editor’s note: This is one of Eric Dondero’s windmill tilts, and it should boost his already formidable reputation for coming up with truly bizarre ideas - TLK] (01/01/07) Link: http://tinyurl.com/y5dd5f Filed under: RRND Events

Source: Arizona Republic Posted on 10.10.06 by Steve Trinward “Two percent of the vote. That’s all the polls say Libertarian Barry Hess is good for in the race for governor this election season. Those kinds of odds would sink most people seeking political office. Not Hess. Those kinds of numbers make him grin. Hess is running for governor as a Libertarian, going up against Democratic incumbent Janet Napolitano and outspoken Republican challenger Len Munsil. Although many pollsters write Hess off as a non-factor, he considers himself Napolitano’s and Munsil’s peer. ‘I’m a legitimate candidate … representing a legitimate party,’ said Hess, 49. Don’t blame yourself if you haven’t heard of Hess or much about his politics. As a Libertarian, he shuns the use of public money to campaign. So don’t expect to see any TV commercials with him throwing the catchphrase, ‘I’m Barry Hess, and I approved this message.’ But the Phoenix father of one believes he speaks to most voters’ sensibilities on such topics as immigration and education, while also embracing the phaseout of taxes and preserving gun rights as key priorities.” [editor’s note: A relatively balanced news story - SAT] (10/10/06) Link: http://tinyurl.com/fgzc2 Filed under: CANDi News and PND News and RRND Events

To further protest the outrages of the city and state governments, Canario refused to cooperate in her arrest, and refuses to speak to any of her captors. Judge Kevin McMahon, after giving a speech on prisoners having the right to remain silent, ordered her held for a month in York Women’s Prison psychiatric ward for her refusal to speak …. Canario was arrested almost a year to the day earlier for trying to attend a public City Council meeting debating the eminent domain issue. Judge Kevin McMahon did the same to her last year for her refusal to speak. … she reported that she was held in ankle shackles the whole time, under bright lights 24 hours a day and that most days she was kept extremely cold. Maria Cantwell and her Republican challenger, Mike McGavick. Guthrie, a former Western Washington University instructor, filed paperwork with the Federal Elections Commission on Saturday saying he will loan his campaign $1.18 million. … Guthrie still has far less money than either of the major-party candidates. Source: ASU Web Devil Posted on 10.02.06 by Thomas L. Knapp “A Superior Court judge is expected to decide today whether to grant an inspection of write-in ballots from last month’s primary election after a lawsuit was filed last week alleging the votes were not correctly counted. The Arizona Libertarian Party filed the suit against the Maricopa County Elections Department when an investigation revealed 70 of the 141 precincts in Maricopa County recorded zero write-in votes for any candidate of any party. … The AZLP launched the in vestigation after they found it odd that Maricopa County reported Cobb received one vote in the primary election, when he needed four. ‘Joe knew something was not right because [other than himself] three of his family members voted for him,’ Kielsky said. Kielsky said he hopes the lawsuit will force the elections department to go back and recount the write-in votes from the precincts where none were reported. The lawsuit also issued an injunction that would stop the county from printing more general-election ballots until the primary ballots are reviewed.” (10/02/06) Link: http://www.statepress.com/issues/2006/10/02/news/698001 Filed under: RRND Events

Peck said no one objected until Councilwoman Suzie Gibbs approached him with a Mission police officer. ‘They told me that I had to leave and that if I came back they would cite me for trespassing,’ Peck said. … Gibbs did not respond to messages left on her residential and mobile phone voicemails, nor e-mail. Source: The Free Liberal Posted on 09.25.06 by Thomas L. Knapp “There was a time when Democrats stood for smaller government. As time went on, the Republican Party under Ronald Reagan and the ‘revolutionaries’ of 1994 took the small government mantle. In a post-9/11 world, both political parties have embraced big-government, thus leaving large numbers of Americans who are serious about smaller-government, without a political home. Enter Frank Gonzalez, a Democrat running against an incumbent Republican, Lincoln Diaz-Balart, in Florida’s 21st district. By maintaining an independent, pro-liberty platform, against a ‘tax-and-spend’ Republican, Gonzalez is effectively working to use Bill Clinton’s strategy of triangulation to steer clear of unpopular positions typically taken by politicians in both political parties while appealing to the large numbers of mainstream voters who he hopes will turn out on Election Day.” (09/25/06) Link: http://www.freeliberal.com/archives/002326.html Filed under: RRND Events

The decision is Libertarian Party of New Mexico v Vigil-Giron, 06-0615. The law requires one petition to qualify a new party, and then separate petitions for each of its nominees (after they have been nominated). No other state except Pennsylvania requires the nominees of a qualified party to submit petitions. In the course of the hour-long debate [sic], aired live locally (and on cable statewide) from the WEWS television studios, neither candidate detailed a plan to make the state’s school funding system constitutional in the eyes of the Ohio Supreme Court. Knapp “Opponents of a Nov. 7 ballot question aimed at curbing eminent domain abuses have lost in a bid to get the Nevada Supreme Court to scrap the stripped-down version of the proposal that it approved on Sept. 8. The high court issued a brief order rejecting a rehearing petition that had been filed by attorneys for Nevadans for the Protection of Property Rights Inc., a court representative said Tuesday. The order gave no explanation for the denial. The coalition of local government agencies and business groups had said what’s left of the question was ‘considerably different’ than the version circulated for voter signatures. … Most of the funding for the ballot question has come from Americans for Limited Government, a Chicago-based libertarian organization headed by New York real estate mogul Howard Rich.” (09/19/06) Link: http://tinyurl.com/gzs4l Filed under: LAND News and RRND Events
