SC: Fake $25k check dupes Salvation Army

Source: Associated Press
Posted on 01.07.10 by Steve Trinward

“The Salvation Army thought it had received a grand gift ahead of Christmas — a $25,000 check. But the donation turned out to be an expensive hoax that may force the charity to cut back on winter assistance for the needy. Investigators said yesterday that more than a dozen Charleston-area charities received fake checks before Christmas purporting to be gifts from a genuine local company. None of the other charities cashed theirs, but the Salvation Army deposited its check. It went ahead and spent some of the money on food and toys for about 100 families, counting on the check to clear. The bank called two days before Christmas to say the check had bounced, and the agency was left with less money than planned to help the needy this cold January.” (01/07/10)

SCOTUS hears arguments in Florida beach case

Source: Christian Science Monitor
Posted on 12.02.09 by Steve Trinward

“A lawyer for waterfront landowners encountered both skepticism and support at the US Supreme Court on Wednesday while urging the justices to wade into a long-running dispute over the effect of erosion-control efforts on seaside property rights in Florida. At issue in the hour-long oral argument was whether a ruling by the Florida Supreme Court had so significantly changed the substance of Florida property law as to amount to a public taking of private property without payment of just compensation. Tallahassee lawyer D. Kent Safriet told the justices that Florida’s highest court ‘redefined’ the essence of littoral property rights in the state … [and] determined that the essential right for waterfront property owners was access to the water, not physical contact with it. The position prompted a response from Justice Antonin Scalia. ‘It would be very strange to have a principle that all a littoral owner gets is a right to access the water, not a right to be on the water,’ he said.” (12/02/09)

SC: Sanford’s lawyers defend governor’s travel

Source: Associated Press
Posted on 12.02.09 by Steve Trinward

“Attorneys for South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford told lawmakers mulling impeachment yesterday that their client did nothing improper by using state-owned aircraft for travel that included political and personal events. … Sanford’s travel and campaign spending have been under scrutiny since he returned in June from a five-day rendezvous with his Argentine lover and confessed a yearlong affair. Since then, investigations found high-priced travel on commercial planes despite state low-cost travel requirements; use of state planes for personal and political purposes; and unreported private plane flights provided by friends and donors.” (12/02/09)

Coalition seeks to reframe GOP race

Source: Boston Globe
Posted on 03.26.07 by Thomas L. Knapp

“Leaders of a secretive coalition that includes some of the most influential social conservatives in the nation are interviewing presidential candidates in hopes of flexing political muscle and reframing the Republican primaries in 2008. Over the past few months, members of the executive committee of the so-called Arlington Group have questioned several declared and potential White House hopefuls with the intention of settling on a single candidate, according to Arlington Group members and Republican operatives familiar with the discussions. A nod from the conservative movement’s biggest names to followers at the grass-roots level would give a major boost to candidates such as former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, whose past moderate positions on social issues have hampered his attempts to court the right, or former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, who lacks front-runner name recognition and fund-raising numbers.” (03/25/07)

MA: Health plan draws interest as US model

Source: Boston Globe
Posted on 12.18.06 by Steve Trinward

“Universal healthcare, an issue the White House and Congress have largely abandoned since the early 1990s, has reemerged as an issue on Capitol Hill and around the country, with lawmakers looking to Massachusetts’ landmark plan as a political and structural model for the nation’s 46 million uninsured. Healthcare specialists and government officials across the political spectrum say the healthcare debate has reached a turning point, with both liberals and conservatives ready to compromise. Liberals are setting aside old demands for a single-payer system, while conservatives are showing a willingness to consider more government involvement in the provision of healthcare.” (12/18/06)

Frist at odds with Bush over ports deal

Source: Tennessean
Posted on 02.22.06 by Steve Trinward

“President Bush, trying to put down a rapidly escalating rebellion among leaders of his own party, yesterday said that he would veto any legislation blocking a deal for a state-owned company in Dubai to take over the management of port terminals in New York, Miami, Baltimore and other major U.S. cities. Bush issued the threat after Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist and House Speaker Dennis Hastert publicly criticized the deal and said a thorough review was necessary to ensure that terrorists could not exploit the arrangement to slip weapons into American ports. Frist gave the White House only an hour’s notice before he broke partisan ranks earlier yesterday, declaring that ‘the decision to finalize this deal should be put on hold.’ The Tennessee senator said that if he was not heeded, ‘I plan on introducing legislation to ensure that the deal is placed on hold until this decision gets a more thorough review.’” (02/22/06)

Demand Congress investigate illegal wiretapping

Source: Electronic Frontier Foundation
Event Date(s): ongoing
Posted on 12.27.05 by Mary Lou Seymour

“Journalists have revealed that President Bush personally authorized the National Security Agency (NSA) to wiretap the international phone and email communications of people within the U.S. — without a search warrant. This surveillance clearly violates both the Fourth Amendment and criminal statutes that prohibit unauthorized electronic surveillance. But only one group has the power to get to the bottom of this scheme to invade Americans’ privacy: the United States Congress. There is already bipartisan support on the Hill for such an investigation, but it needs shoring up. Send a message to your representatives, and urge them to hold hearings on this illegal eavesdropping.” (12/25/05)

Eighteen prisoners are in medical facilities forcibly receiving nutrition intravenously or through nasal tubes, Pentagon officials said.” (09/13/05)

Roberts rebuffs Democrats’ questions

Source: Cincinnati Enquirer
Posted on 09.14.05 by R. Lee Wrights

“Chief Justice-nominee John Roberts repeatedly refused to answer questions about abortion and other contentious issues at his confirmation hearing Tuesday, telling frustrated Democrats he would not discuss matters that could come before the Supreme Court. ‘I think nominees have to draw the line where they are most comfortable,’ said Roberts, who also sidestepped questions about civil rights, voting rights and the limits of presidential power in a long, occasionally antagonistic day in the witness chair.” (09/13/05)
