Last year, a federal appeals court overturned the District of Columbia’s ban on handguns. Now the U.S. Supreme Court will decide the case after nearly seventy years of silence on the Second Amendment. Observers expect the Court to finally settle the legal question of whether the constitutional ‘right of the people to keep and bear arms’ is an individual right held by all, or a ‘collective right’ of the state governments to maintain militias. What did the Founders intend when they drafted the Second Amendment? Please join us as constitutional legal scholar and Independent Institute Research Fellow Stephen P. Halbrook and George Mason University Law School legal historian Joyce Lee Malcolm examine these issues.

“A gunman has opened fire with a rifle in a shopping centre in the US state of Nebraska, killing eight people before fatally shooting himself, police say. A further five people were wounded — two critically — in the shooting at the Westroads Mall in Omaha. Police have identified the gunman as Robert Hawkins, 19, from Bellevue, close to Omaha. They said a suicide note had been recovered. Hawkins struck as the centre was crowded with Christmas shoppers. Witnesses spoke of shoppers screaming and scrambling to find safe shelter as the gunman struck.” [editor’s note: Naturally, no witnesses spoke of the armed citizen who put this animal down BEFORE he had time to shoot 13 people and himself. Why? Because there were almost certainly “no guns” signs posted at the entrances to the mall pursuant to the idiotic agenda of declaring such places to be free-fire zones for people who don’t obey such signs - TLK] (12/06/07)

“The law has been misapplied to Cory Maye. If an unidentified intruder were to burst into our home in the middle of the night, we would be within our rights to defend ourselves and our children. Given the law of Mississippi, Cory Maye acted within his right on the night of December 26th, 2001. It is a great tragedy that a police officer lost his life in this encounter. The execution of Cory Maye would magnify the tragedy, killing an innocent citizen because of the death of an officer. Haley Barbour, the governor of Mississippi, should grant an unconditional pardon to Cory Maye.”

“An international citizen disarmament coalition, Control Arms, is sponsoring a ‘Million Faces petition’ and ‘is collecting photos and self portraits from around the world to reach [their] goal of one million faces by June 2006. [They] will use these faces to send a powerful, global message of support to the world’s governments for an International Arms Trade Treaty.’ The idea of The Million Moon March (as in ‘mooning’) is to send them photos from the side that believes in the right of the people to keep and bear arms — to let the rights grabbers know there are untold numbers of people who refuse to be disarmed, and quite candidly, to taunt and hopefully enrage them.” [Editor’s note: Thanks to the inimitable David Codrea for this action … be sure to check his blog for the latest pictures and join in the fun by submitting your own - MLS] (02/06/06)

“House and Senate negotiators are reportedly close to hammering out differences on legislation that could greatly impact gun owners. You will remember that before the Thanksgiving break, legislators were trying to ram PATRIOT Act revisions through the Congress and onto the Presidents desk. Some of these revisions would improve the PATRIOT Act … some would not. Of greatest concern to gun owners is a provision in H.R. 3199 that would allow the FBI to obtain ‘firearms sales records.’ … This bill is clearly on the fast track. It is rumored on Capitol Hill that negotiators are nearing a deal on H.R. 3199. You can greatly help by making them aware that gun owners are closely watching what they do on the subject of ‘firearms sales records.’” (12/06/05)

“RWVA is launching a nationwide effort to rebuild America as a Nation of Riflemen. Instead of Apple trees, the goal is to plant the Spirit of the Rifleman. It is time once again to sow the seeds of the Tree of Liberty in every town, village and city of America. This is our new Appleseed program. With your help, we’ll spread the American tradition of practical rifle marksmanship across our great land. We’ll work together to find or create the facilities and resources to allow every able and willing citizen to learn to shoot a rifle safely and well close to home. We’ll help each other gain the skills and equipment needed to defend our country, if the need arises. We will establish again what once stood as the primary protection of our unalienable liberties.” (11/05)
