“On the night of July 4, 1776, in London, England, King George III made the following entry in his diary: ‘Nothing important happened today.’ Telecommunications would not come into existence until 1836 and no trans-Atlantic cables would be laid until 1866. Hence, he had no way of knowing what had transpired that day in Philadelphia.
