“Funny how landmark Supreme Court decisions seem never actually to settle anything.The court, to be sure, handed down a big one yesterday — ruling by a 5-4 margin that a Washington, DC, ban on handgun ownership violates the Second Amendment of the US Constitution. It’s a welcome decision — if only in its faithfulness to the uniquely American role of a written Constitution in protecting individual liberties. Justice Antonin Scalia, writing for the majority in District of Columbia v. Heller, demonstrated clearly and forcefully that the language of the Second Amendment does, in fact, include an individual right to gun ownership — end of story.Well, maybe not.” (06/27/08)
