Phillies 2008: Thoughts on Social Liberties
Posted on 07.26.07 by George Phillies

Family Values - There are few parts of family life more sensitive than guiding medical care for family members unable to act for themselves. In the Terry Schiavo case, Congress tried to steal control of her medical care. Congress voted against real family values. If you support real family values, you should elect Libertarians. We believe Uncle Sam has no business making life and death decisions for you and your loved ones.

The Kelo Decision - Your house should belong to you, not to the lounge lizard who bribed your city council. Eminent Domain takings should be limited to traditional public purposes. Eminent domain should not be used to steal your house for a developer or sports team.

The Mark of the Beast - The National ID card, whether disguised as a driver’s license or not, is the ultimate violation of your personal privacy. Generations of civil libertarians have known: State identity papers are a key milestone on the march to a police state. I will vigorously urge Congress to repeal the Real ID act, the Patriot Act, and other laws attacking our freedom.

Education - George Bush wants to rescue the education of our children, using all the wisdom and compassion he used to rescue New Orleans. The No Child Left Behind Act should be repealed. The Federal government should leave education to states, communities, and parents.

Abortion - Government should take no role in this matter. It should not encourage or discourage abortion.

Gun Control - The right to keep and bear arms, in defense of person, property, and freedom, is central to the continued existence of a free country. The Second Amendment is not about hunting. Only the Libertarian Party stands behind the fundamental meaning of this most fundamental liberty. I will vigorously deploy the Presidential veto pen and other political means to defend and expand your Second Amendment rights.

Prohibition - When I was a little boy, television was filled with gangster prohibition movies. My parents, who were very wise people, told me that there were two certainties about prohibition: It was a total failure. No one would ever be dumb enough to try it again. Now we have drug prohibition, a total failure that wastes tens of billions of dollars and gives criminal records to tens of millions of Americans. It’s time to treat marijuana the way we treat alcohol. Yes, people will have drug problems. People have alcohol problems, too. We live in an imperfect world, and should not make it worse.
